National Kelpie Field Trial Championship Tasmania The Fortieth NKFTC was hosted very successfully at Westbury between 12th & 14th of November by the Pyengana Sheepdog Club committee. The Showground proved to be a very good venue and spectators appreciated having a grandstand where they could sit in comfort to watch the dogs working and were particularly grateful for its shelter during a heavy shower on the first day. A total of over 60 dogs competed representing NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania and they were thoroughly tested by a very even lot of young sheep who consistently tried to avoid being drafted which meant that the yard work section took more time than estimated with the result that a big percentage of workers failed to complete the course in the allocated 15 minutes. The fastest time was 12.30 seconds by Matthew Johnson of Tasmania with Halsteds Johnny. This years event was won by Kevin Howell, working Karana Abba ll- an attractive black and tan rising 4 year old dog sired by Boanong Buster (Milburn Basil x Coleslea Sandy) x Karana Sap ll (Karana Scud x K Vicki) who was top scorer into the final on 82 points 14 points greater than the next best score. In the final Abba put us another good run to top score with a 75. Jim Luce finished second with Coopendale Tim ll 042895 a 7 year old black and tan dog bred by G Cooper of Bethungra sired by Capree Beau ll ( Tanners Boots x Capree Poppy) x Lauries Abby. (Capree Boss ll x Glenlee Rose) Tim a smooth moving dog put up two good runs and was unlucky not to have penned in either - the loss of the points for the pen cost him a chance to beat Abba. Gary White finished third working Binnaburra Luke a 5year old red and tan dog bred by Gordon Curtis (WA) Sired by Whites Tex V (Jendara Bobby x Whites Sally IV) x Ramulan Samantha (Binnaburra Ottis x Ramulan Dusty) Luke put up two good runs he drew an un-cooperative sheep in the finals of the NKFTC and just failed to pen. Gary White and Luke won the Novice event convincingly. David Motley finished fourth with Timaru Bull a 4 year old black and tan male bred by Bill Gibbs, Narromine. Sired b y Motleys Ripper (Capree Ledge x Kalkee Jess ll) x Wyamah Ben (Gunna Dave x Gunna Slice) a stylish medium sized dog- who was quick to anticipate and block without over working - trained to run Nero x Halloween Harper) x Coogee Tes ll (Capree Minute x Benz Ally) Ben who worked very well in the heats and was the second top scorer into the finals but lacked luck and failed to pen in the final. Michael Johnston came 6th working Marabou Jimmy a smart looking 3 year old black and tan bred by Simon Male, sired by Coogee Wonder (Yallaroi Toss x Coogee Tess ll) x Philscreek Bella ( Boanong Buster x Philscreek Fly) Michael and Jimmy were unlucky in the heats when having completed a good cast lift and draw only to discover that a gate had been left open in the yards and was forced to retire and wait for a re run. Whilst he scored well in the heats he had no luck in the finals. |
Jim Luce and Coogee Rue who was third top score into the finals ran into trouble and failed to score to become the unplaced finalist.
